Mike -- great idea. I actually hit up "the shack" (damn that whole instant gratification thing) for a new soldering iron since I apparently broke the one i have trying to fix the FUBARed tip that was on it... and a bunch of other stuff.

I remember when I was a kid in a candy store when I went to Best Buy or EB Games.... now it's radio shack and the 2000+ Digikey catalog... how far have I really come? Instead of wanting the MP3 player in hand, I want to build it from scratch.... hmph!

I can relate to your soldering issues. It seems like soldering irons are not up to the task of soldering itsy bitsy solder pads in close proximity without melding them into one solid mass of soldered goo.

Necessity is the mother of inventions... although sometimes it gets invented for other things. I found that the woodburning tools have a wide variety of tips along with a much gentler wattage to prevent overheating adjacent components, but still allowing the solder to flow.

I'm sure there is a more acceptable solution but hey, I was in Walmart while my better half was getting scrap book supplies and there it was in all its fine pointed glory (well, something similar to this but you get the idea):

I still may do that -- given the rate that I am progressing on this project right now, I might use those cheapo chargers to actually charge things as opposed to dismantling them. What I will be running into at some point is the power requirements are all different (all are 5V, per the USB spec) at various current levels. This means I will need more voltage regulators (not a huge issue, they are cheap)... I'm considering buying a USB hub, hacking it down, and letting it run as the power device.

I mentioned either in this post (or in the next one, can't remember) about how I am running out of room in the box. I will take some pictures today so you can see what I'm talking about. The LCD and the push-buttons are deep enough that I need to be concerned.......

I wish I read that more carefully before hitting submit, but you get the idea. I dislike hardwired cords as much as I dislike trying to solder those wires that are normally in them. ;)

Right... well my thought on that was rather than have hard wired 12V leads on 'throw away' grade power cords, why not wire up USB type plugs designed to be nothing more than power outlets? Something like phone and ipod chargers are doing now... simply using power bricks with USB plugs that expect the user to use the existing USB interface cord coupled to the brick? This would give you the best of both worlds, small size and easy to replace worn power cords.

I'm going to hard-wire the +12V lead to each of the wires and take off the bulky lighter-adapter ends, as they are just too big :) I'm not really *sold* on this yet, as the quality of the power adapters I just bought are... well.. they were inexpensive. We'll see.

No updates other than your answer, unfortunately. Come out to my end of the building and see my desk and you'll understand why ;)

I'm kind of glad the same would isn't holding true for computers. Systems are so cheap now it doesn't make sense to pay people for multiple hours of repair work when a new system is only a few hundred dollars. Though, I might feel different if I were still fixing computers on an hourly wage :)
